Vern & Olivia Harvey have been exhibiting dogs for over 40 years. They have shown in Obedience, Conformation, and have run a competitive sled team ranging from 3 dogs to 10 dogs. In addition, they have also run teams of Alaskan Malamutes, Samoyeds, and Belgian Tervuren.
Running the teams has given them tremendous insight as to the strengths and weaknesses of the individual breeds and the individual dogs. This has enabled them to properly assess structure and movement, and to prioritize the attributes and faults as specific to the AKC standard.
Prior to Judging, Vern campaigned BIS CH. SIERRA'S HAWKEYE to #2 in breed competition. (As a side note, he did this while traveling in a Ford Courier pickup with homemade camper shell.) In addition, the Harvey's handled many of the Working and Herding breeds.
Although the Harvey's did not compete in Herding Trials, they attended many and also worked their Tervs herding sheep.
Teaching handling classes thru the Palo Verde Golden Retriever Club and the Greater Shelby KC has provided continuing education in multiple breeds.
Vern & Olivia began showing dogs in 1972. Their initial exposure to dog shows was in the obedience ring. Then, they purchased their first show quality bitch, and the breeder stipulated that they would show her in at least three AKC point shows. In her first show, "Tara" won a blue ribbon, and Vern & Olivia were hooked! Their love for the breed has led them down many paths from showing in Obedience and Conformation, to racing sled teams of 3 to 10 dogs (competitively in the southwest), to judging in AKC dog shows.
OSHVAH Siberians began with a bitch named Thurston's Tara of Sun Bear, who was a Monadnock's Akela granddaughter and Frosty Aire's Banner Boy granddaughter. Although Tara would be their "Reserve Queen," she really got them started in this Sport that they love so much. She produced Ch. Oshvah's Miss Piggy, (who was one the best bitches of her time). Piggy was a beautiful red and white bitch who moved like a dream and was crazy enough to keep them on their toes! Not to be outdone in the Conformation ring, Tara also produced Oshvah's Ivashka to Tova, CDX.
Although OSHVAH had its proud beginnings in Atlanta, they have been fortunate to have also been located in Arizona, Mississippi, and now, Cleveland, Ohio. Along the way, they have made many friends, and have always loved competing with their lovely Siberian Huskies.
In addition, OSHVAH has also been the proud owner of Doberman Pinschers, Belgian Tervuren, Samoyeds, and a Whippet. The Tervs and Samoyeds loved to run with the Siberians. The Dobermans kept faithful watch over all of them, including their wonderful Arizona neighbors, too!
